Dream Clarity: How to Keep
Your Vision Alive

"Nothing happens unless first we dream"
Carl Sandberg

At this time of year it might be easy to set your goals and intentions but it is often difficult to actually see them through and make them happen. Particularly if the weather is cold and dark and all you want to do is snuggle down in front of the television or under the duvet.

So how can you keep your dreams alive?

When we have a big dream it enters our consciousness in small intangible flashes: a hint of something wonderful, a feeling of hope, and a glimpse of power, warmth, security, satisfaction or perhaps recognition, like re-discovering an old friend.

It's like a eureka moment. We feel elated and optimistic and maybe even a little frightened. Imagine if we really did get what we wanted? Would we be able to cope? Who would we be? What would it feel like? Can we give ourselves permission to think this big? What if we never get there?

Sometimes we can scare ourselves into inertia in which case not bothering with our vision seems infinitely preferable to seeking satisfaction. We can also forget what it is exactly we are working towards and lose sight of the bigger picture. So how can we keep the dream alive and not let it wither on the vine and fall by the wayside of lost opportunities and regrets?

Dream Map

Start to collect images from magazines, postcards or downloaded from the internet, that represent aspects of the dream. The car you want to drive, the home you want to live in, how you might want to look, pictures that form a composite vision of what you are aiming for.

Piece the story board together and place it somewhere you can look at it regularly and get a top up of inspiration from every time you look at it. Feel free to add to it and keep it fresh as your future unfolds and the dream evolves.

Role Models

We are often inspired by the stories of how others got to their dreams. Look to your own heroes be they, Bill Gates, Anita Roddick or Ranulph Fiennes and learn how their tenacity drove them on, overcame extreme obstacles, re-wrote the rules and conquered their fears. Hearing how others did it can make our own goals seem achievable. Think about when you write your book on how you did it!

Dreams Love Company

Create a community of others who are aiming high. Share ideas, give support and help each other out with resources. Probably one of the most effective ways of keeping a dream alive, exploring creative possibilities associated with it and keeping you powerfully focused on taking one step after another is by hiring a coach. A Coach offers unconditional support and a hand to hold or provide inspiration and motivation to help to get you there.
