Purpose of the Workshop

The Career Development Workshop will provide you with an opportunity to:

  • Learn and apply a process to design your development strategy
  • Complete a preliminary self assessment
  • Learn how to assess your reputation and effectively obtain feedback
  • Identify the future trends in your industry, organisation and profession and see the implications for career decision making
  • Set a career direction with specific goals
  • Draft a development plan of action
  • Prepare for development related conversations with your coach/manager

Workshop Outline

Person:

Self awareness - or the lack of it - affects every choice and decision you make. You cannot plan your career until you can answer the question Who am I?

In this session you will:

  • Complete a self assessment in the areas of values, interests, competencies and skills, personal traits/style and profession

Perspective:

Answering the question How do others see me? provides you with information to check out your assessment of yourself.

In this session you will:

  • Assess how others see you; and
  • Learn how to effectively obtain feedback

Place of work:

Before you can execute any career development plan, you need to know the opportunities available in your current industry, organisation, and profession. Understanding these and being able to identify broad trends and challenges in the workplace environment allows you to identify your options and your choices.

In this session you will:

  • Examine a model for understanding your workplace environment
  • Explore future trends and their implications and
  • Understand the importance of developing future competencies and skills

Possibilities:

Many people think of career development in only one way - promotion. Times have changed. So too have the strategies for managing careers. Given the changing working environment, it is essential that we look at our development plans within the context of our life plans.

In this session you will:

  • Examine your life plan as a backdrop to the creation of your development plan
  • Understand the options for career development and
  • Learn how to research information and use networking as a way to gain insights and opportunities

Plan:

Successful career development always involves more than thinking and self assessment. Success requires a clear viable plan of action that turns goals into realities.

In this session you will:

  • Understand what it will take to accomplish your goals
  • Understand the process for creating a plan
  • Design a draft development plan and
  • Prepare for a development discussion with your coach/manager
